Sea Monster: Lancetfish

Lancetfish replica

This is a Lancetfish also known as a Handsaw fish because of their dorsal fins which you can see on the picture above is very prominent. Their scientific name Alepisaurus, translates as "scaleless lizard" because this sea creature doesn't have any scale and their skin is instead covered with pores.

Lancetfish usually feed at night (more of like a vampire for me LOL) eating crustaceans, squid and smaller species of fish. They can grow up to 6.5 ft or 2meters in long (i can't imaghine them growing that long, CREEPY!).

They are not considered as a good fish or good as a food for humans since their body mostly consist of large amount on water making their flesh spongy. The way that their muscles have a high water substance makes it improbable that the lancetfish can move rapidly or seek after other prey, so researchers conjecture the lancetfish is a snare predator — it likely uses its enormous dorsal blade to quicken in short blasts to overcome prey.

They can be found usually in open waters throughout tropical and subtropical oceans, though they've been known to travel as far north as Greenland and Iceland. Their are some news as well that they are found on North Carolina and it's a live one! Well for me I will be creeped out if I saw one looking at their jaws makes me see some blood on my hands it feels like they will bite once you touch them. (I'm such a scaredy cat, i know haha )
